The Clinica Evangelica Morava is located in Ahuas, Gracias a
Dios, Honduras. We have a sister clinic in Cauquira, in the same department of Honduras. The Clinic opened in 1942,
prior to the arrival of government health care for the region. The Clinica Evangelica Morava works in complementary
fashion with the government. While access to health care is a constitutional right on paper, the reality is that
government resources are stretched and unable to meet the need.
Dr. Norvelle Goff, a native Miskito, is director of the Moravian Medical Program in Honduras, overseeing both clinics.
She also attends patients, primarily in Ahuas. While working at the Clinic as a nurse, when there were no physicians,
she decided to go to medical school. She trained at the University Hospital in the capital. At the same time, she
worked as an ICU nurse in the same institution. Dr. Goff has worked in Ahuas as a physician since 1988. She also
has a degree in public health. She is married to Dr. Rudy. They have one child.
Dr. Gerard Rudy grew up in the Midwest in the United States. He received 3 degrees (BS, MPH, MD) from The University
of Michigan. He served a residency in family medicine at Cook County Hospital in Chicago. He made his first visit
to the Clinica Evangelica Morava in 1990. It was a life-changing event. He serves as medical director of the Clinic
in Ahuas, where he also attends patients.
The Moravian Medical Program in Honduras is a mission of the Moravian Church in Honduras. The Moravian Medical
Program in Honduras is supported, in large part, by the Moravian Church Board of World Mission and the Reformed
Church in America. Patients also contribute financially to their own care.
